Family Listening Assignment #2

This week’s listening assignment is Chopin’s famous “Minute Waltz”, Op. 64, No. 1. It is said that Chopin was inspired to write it by watching a small dog run in circles chasing its tail, hence its subtitle, Valse du petit chien. Although many people think that the waltz should be performed in one minute (or less), the title word “minute” actually was meant to have the stress over the “u”, meaning minute (minüt) in the sense of diminuitive/small.
Watch graceful Ukrainian-American pianist Valentina Lisitsa’s performance first. Follow that with Canadian pianist-composer Marc-André Hamelin’s dazzling playing with (spoiler alert) surprise ending. Enjoy
